Deep Study: Balaam
The story of Balaam according to the Christian Bible is a gripping tale between
the forces of Good and the forces of evil. Likely the basis for many fantasy books
or movies of fictional tales filled with sorcery, stargazing, pagan ritual and more,
the Bible tells the story of a great sorcerer whose fame had spread for hundreds
An evil king focused upon building his empire sought to use the magic of the sorcerer
against the Children of Israel, turning them away from their most powerful ally:
The Almighty God.
According to the book of Numbers, Balaam practiced divination, which was condemned
and punishable by death under the Mosaic Law. But divination and its consequences
are not easily understood among the followers of William Branham
, because in his
teaching, Branham obscurred the lines between prophecy and divination.
Divination is the practice of foreseeing the future through various means, some
of which include fasting, stargazing, and even occultic practices. Typically, those
who practice divination are summoned by those who wish to use the knowledge of the
future to their own purpose, such as Balaak the king in the story of Balaam. But
it is vastly different than prophecy. The message given by the diviner is not a
message that uplifts the entire body, and the intent of the message can only serve
two purposes. Divination uplifts the sorcerer into greater fear or respect through
amazement in his accuracy, while providing insight into a future event that many
times cannot be changed. While the sorcerer is lifted into power, those focusing
on their anticipation of the future become weaker vessels durign the present.
Prophecy (from God), however, is given directly by God for the sole purpose of building
a stronger body. It is never intended to lift one man into greater respect, and
many times through the examples we find in the Bible, it actually was given to humble
During the Old Testament, there was a period of time that we refer to as the "age
of the prophets," and it fell between the time of the Old Covenant and the days
of Jesus Christ. According to the Apostle Paul, the law was given as a tool for
learning, like a student being tutored until his graduation. Paul tells us that
during the time of the Law, the Children of Israel were proving time and again that
man cannot save themselves, and needed a Savior to redeem them from the curse. When
we study the prophets of the Old Testament, we quickly find that they were not diviners
who were summoned to foresee future events, but instead were men who humbled themselves
enough to let God speak through them.
The Word of the Lord through the prophets seemed to be a beating drum, all saying
the same exact thing time and again: "Children of Israel, you have failed to save
yourselves through keeping the Law. Because you have done this, I will bring the
curses that were given under the Old Covenant as a consequence for failure. But
one day, I will send the Messiah to redeem you from this curse and show you a better
Luke 16:16 tells us that this time ended with John the Baptist. When the New Covenant
of Grace was established, there was no need for God to send messengers to tell the
Children of Israel that they had broken the Law — According to Paul, the Old Covenant
was made obsolete by the Everlasting Covenant of Grace.
The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom
of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it.
Balaam was not one of these prophets, and though God gave him a message to foretell
the Redeemer, Balaam was still an evil sorcerer. When Balaam was summoned, he was
not summoned because of his reputation of being a prophet of the Lord. Instead,
Balaam was summoned for his powers of divination, and accepted fees in exchange
for this abomination.
So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination
in their hand. And they came to Balaam and gave him Balak's message.
Ultimately, this was the cause of Balaam's demise. Though Balaam was not one of
the Children of Israel, the armies of Israel excuted capital punishment in agreement
with the Law of Moses. Balaam was put to death for the abmoniation of divination.
Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with
the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain.
But Branham's version of the story of Balaam did not focus on the distinct line
between good and evil. According to William Branham, there were two messengers for
that "age," Moses and Balaam. Branham taught his followers that Balaam had the "same
anointing" that was given to Moses, claiming that all who can peer into the future
were considered "prophets" instead of diviners.
And the Moabites, in Branham's version of the story, were worshippers of Yahweh
instead of the gods of Baal. While history (and the Bible) records the Moabites
claimed that this pagan nation could be compared to "formal" or "organized" Christianity.

Branham's teachings on Balaam:
Balaam, anointed with the same Spirit that was upon Moses. What was the difference?
The teaching of Moses was perfect.
And now, many people has tried to make Balaam just a, oh, a soothsayer or something.
But Balaam was not a soothsayer. He was a prophet of the Lord.
And finally they came down through the land of — of Moab there, and the king, Balap,
he — Balak, rather. He thought that he would be wiped out, and he said, "Oh, this
great company here that's like, will lick us up like the ox licks the grass up off
the field." He sent over to a preacher, a prophet by the name of Balaam. He said,
"Come down and curse this people, Israel, for me, for I understand that whoever
you curse, is cursed, and whoever you bless, they're blessed."
Now, Balaam, or Balak, rather, the king of Moab, he wasn't a infidel. He was a believer.
Sure he was. And Balaam wasn't a infidel. Balaam, the prophet, he was a believer.
But a two... Here's two sets of believers, them same spirit, like Cain and Abel,
they'd come right down again. Now notice, here was a man, the king of Moab said,
"Come down and curse this people," believers cursing the believers. Now, Balak come
down, got up on the hill, and Balaamshowed him the most — uttermost parts.

Now watch. Balaam built seven altars. Now, he wasn't a communist. He was a believer.
Now, he's up here on the hill. And here's Israel down in the valley. And he builds

Notice that Balaam back there, can't leave that guy yet. Look at him standing there.
He's just as fundamental in his doctrine as they was down there, the same doctrine.
But they did not have the signs and wonders. And this group had the signs and wonders
be... all they had... They had a — a Divine healing program on. These guys didn't
know nothing about it. If that ain't typical today, I don't know it.

Here was this man up here, Balaam, was just as fundamental, and just as right in
his doctrine as Moses was. But Moses had healing and signs and — and a big Pillar
of Fire hanging over him.

Balaam was just as — just as orthodox as Moses was.
But, now, Moses had Abraham's promise, going to the promised land. Balaam, also
a prophet of the Lord, standing down there.
Balaam said, "I cannot do it unless God would send me." Well then he prayed to God.
But that night, the Spirit came and talked to him. And He said, "Don't you go."
That looked like it ought to be enough, don't it? Now, I'm preaching almost conviction
to myself, right here this afternoon. He's already told me, "You're confirming — confining
too much of that gift of healing on miracles." And I want this to be the climax.
And notice. Then he thought. "I can only speak as God speaks." No prophet can say
anything 'less God puts it in his mouth, if he's a prophet. If he's a false prophet,
if he's a hireling, why, he — he can say anything. But if you say anything, and God
has to bring it to pass. If God said it, it'll be that way. Notice. Then when he
said that, said he could only speak what God put in his mouth. And God told him
to send them back. And he... Notice. Then Balaam, like a lot of hireling prophets
now, for usury, for money, he come back again and asked him the second time. And
he went to God again. Now look. There is a perfect will of God, and there's a permissive
will of God. And God permitted His prophet to go on, yet he... It wasn't His perfect
will. It was His permissive will. And I feel this afternoon is the same thing on
these — working these — this — for this miracle line. It is God's, maybe, permissive
will, but it's not His perfect will. You are supposed to take my word, and if — if...
But look, when Balaam... Now, to bring it back to the Church; it's moving on. When
Balaam went down there, he looked upon that people. Israel had done everything that
was on the calendar, nearly, in the way of sin. They had backslid on God. They'd
been up, they'd... [Blank.spot.on.tape — Ed.]... church... the little church standard,
they broke up men's homes, and run this a way and that way, and done everything
that was doing. That's right. But don't judge all of them by that one. See? We've
all had it. That's true. But they say, "Oh, that — that — that Holy Ghost church,
all them shouters and go on. Look, I've knowed one of their pastors that done this."
Yes, and brother, if there hadn't been a little money behind it, there'd been a
whole lot more said about these others too. But when they got a lot of money to
smother it down, these fellows have to take the rub. That's all. But remember, we
have good and bad in both. And Balaam looked upon that people, and he thought, "Looky
here..." Now, listen. He thought, surely, that a holy moral God would have to curse
a people like that, that done such things as that. But when looking upon them, he
looked; he said, "Now, looky. They've done this; they've done that. Surely, there's
not a holy God in heaven could look upon that, and — and absolutely have any blessing
with that Church. 'Cause, look at them. They have done this, and they've done that."
He looked at it from the eye standpoint, from the moral standpoint, trying to judge
a people by a moral God, holy God. But he failed to see the smitten rock before
them, and the brazen serpent, that atonement that forgave their sins. And so is
it today, when a people laugh and say, "Them Divine healers, them holy-rollers,
they done this and that." I'll admit it. But they fail to see the Blood of Jesus
Christ, the Son of God, moving on before the Church. That's right. It atones. There's
a sin atonement made for the Church. And people, you who know God, move on. God
is for you. No matter how much they try to put a curse on it, it can't be done.
The Blood of Christ separates that. God did not look upon any people as their own
moral standards. The only thing He looks at, is the Blood of His own Son, Jesus
Christ. And any persons that's under that Blood is safely protected. Amen.
I never get to read in the Bible, but I got the 22nd chapter of the book of Numbers,
and in there I begin to speak on the prophet Balaam, got up to his part, and when
he came down, and how God told him in the first place, "Don't not go with them men."
But then he prayed again and kept on, and — and finally I believe for Balaam, it
was the love of money is the reason that he wanted to go. I'm not sure; I've never
knowed till I come in. As, I think, it was the love of money. But in my case it
wasn't the love of money, it was a sympathy for human beings. And no matter how
little or how big, it's all wrong to disobey God (That's right.), regardless of
what it is. Then Balaam, he went on down to there, and the Angel of the Lord met
him in the way. And when I got to that, friends, I — I don't know. There was something
struck me here, and we had just a line laying out, nothing but miracles could be
performed; that was all, nothing but miracles. Well... And standing here in the
pulpit when I got up to Balaam, preaching to you all and I seen that Angel standing
in the way, and Balaam could not see it... It was a mule he was riding on seen it.
Then he got to a narrow way, to a narrow place, like where a gate went through.
And there the Angel appeared again, and the mule saw it, and Balaam could not see
the Angel of the Lord, and how that we have disobeyed God, so. So then when I did
that, I seen then what the appearing of the Angel was; and I realized for my first
time that's true. What a mistake that I had made. I've made an assertion to the
people of a power of God that even the Son of God never made any statement like
that. I made a challenge to bring... to what was healed right there to what was...?...

We think about Balaam, the prophet who sold out, yet, standing up there on the mountain,
said, "How can any prophet say any words unless God first put them in his mouth?"
Truly, Father, all praise and glory for all the works goes to You, our Father.
You here in California blessed with a great observatory up here, planetarium, where
you see stars way out. I believe a hundred and twenty million years of light-space
you can look out through that glass, one of the largest in the world. They had those,
not that type, but they had planetariums and so forth and stargazers in the days
of Jesus. But there was a star that passed through the land. And three men followed
that star, and no one else saw it but them, for they were looking for it. They were
looking for the Star of Jacob to rise. See? They were down in the country there
where Balaam, the prophet, had spoke that this Star of Jacob would rise. Now, you
look for Him. Believe Him with all your heart. All right, that's...
And no true prophet of God, as Balaam said of old, when he stood down there and
he sold and commercialed his gift, that's right, but he was prophet. And he said
things that sticks right today, to Israel and so forth. He was a prophet. He said,
"How can a prophet speak unless God puts it in his mouth?" If he's going to be true.
You've got to say what God says, and you can't say no more; you can't say no less.

But one day there was an old king got awful excited about this bunch of Hebrews
coming through there. And they knowed that God was with them. So he went over and
got a prophet to come and curse them, by the name of Balak. And old Balaam got a...
Balak had a prophet by the name of Balaam. And Balaam straddled a little old mule,
after he... God done told him not to go. And, you know, he started down through,
riding his mule, with a couple servants. He was going over to curse Israel. "Sure,
I'll go take care of that bunch of holy-rollers for you. I'll fix them up." So he
got on the mule and away he went, right down through there. The first thing you
What Balaam failed to see, is what the modern preachers and modern people fail to
see in the Holy Ghost church today. They say, "I know a lot of them call themselves
this, that, and the other, and a lot of things they've done." I'll admit that, brother.
They say, "They blow up with this, and they've done that, and done this." That's
true; I'll admit that they've done wrong. But where Balaam failed to see that Brazen
Serpent and that smitten Rock going before Israel making atonement. It was God's
calling, God's election. They were God's people. Hallelujah. God had called them
and separated them, and put a Serpent before them (as an atonement) and a smitten
Rock, and Balaam failed to see That. In this day the modern preacher fails to see
the power of the Holy Ghost, the smitten Jesus Christ, that we're in His Body; by
one Spirit are we all baptized into one Body and become members of that Body. And
that's what the modern man failed to see in there. Before that Holy Ghost church
moving on, they fail to see that, that smitten Rock, that Brazen Serpent going before
the church, making an atonement. Balaam failed to see It.
Then here comes Balaam out. He made his sacrifice. Watch. He built seven altars.
Talk about being fundamental, brother, he was Presbyterian to the core. He built
seven altars. And he offered seven clean bullocks on it, clean sacrifices. Is that
right? And not only that, but he offered seven ram, speaking of Jesus Christ coming.
Is that right? The Lamb, the ram of God, takes away the sin of the world. The same
offerings that they was offering right down there in Israel... Is that right? The
same offering that was offered here was...
Then we notice again, a way back in the East some magis, or stargazers... I believe
they'd noticed the prophecy of Balaam, that a Star of Jacob would rise.
Now, if fundamentalism is what God requires, He would have accepted it in Cain.
If fundamentalism is what God requires, He would accepted it at the hand of Balaam,
'cause they was offering the same sacrifice that Israel was offering down at the
bottom of the hill.
Cain was a believer. So was Moab a believer. So was Balaam a believer, and they
were fundamentally, Scripturally right.
Now, notice, that Balaam was just as fundamental in his worship as Moses was. Balaam
required seven altars. That's what God required Moses. He required seven clean sacrifices,
bullocks, and not only that, but seven rams, rams speaking of their faith that Jesus
was coming, the Lamb, the Ram, He-sheep. See? He put it... He's just as fundamental...
They worshipped the Lord God of heaven, the Moabites did. They come down there;
Balaam said, "Go build me seven altars," God's number of perfection, seven altars.
"And upon each one of these altars, you put a clean sacrifice," just the same thing
that they was offering down there in Israel. Notice also, "Put a ram," signifying
the coming of the Lord Jesus.
I can see Israel as they journeyed on; there they was; it's true. Did you ever here
them say... Oh, about the church, they said, "Oh, look down there at Israel." Balak
said, "Why, you send and get me Balaam." And said, "When Balaam comes up here..."
They had an old fundamental preacher over there, half backslidden, so they said,
"Get him and come over here, and he will curse these people for me."
But Moab worshipped God; so did Israel. Now, Moab was a denomination. He was a great
nation, all organized. But Moses with the children of Israel dwelt in tents, scattered
everywhere. Now, they both had pastors. Moab sprung up from the Lot's daughter.
Now, they both — they worshipped God. They had a bishop up there. And his name was
Balaam. And so he... They went over to get their — their bishop to come over here
and stop this bunch of holy-rollers.
Look at Korah, Moab in the Bible, when Israel came up. There was Ko — Moab, come
from the sons of Lot, which was by his daughter. And they had a great place, a great
church. And when they come down to curse Israel, why, they built the same kind of
altars, prayed to the same God, made the same sacrifices, bullocks. And they offered
a sheep, representing the coming of Christ. And fundamentally speaking, everything
that Moses was offering down there, Balaam was offering up here. So if God only
requires fundamental teaching as intellectual, God could not refuse Balaam's offering.
But the reason, why did He refuse Balaam and accept Moses, is because there was
signs and wonders. God was a vindicating. They had Divine healing, a brass serpent.
They had a smitten rock. They had joy. They had a leading Spirit. They had a Pillar
of Fire. They had everything among them, signs and wonders, God proving that He
had accepted them.

Notice, how beautiful. And while they were out wandering around (that's where they
got into all kinds of trouble), and the devil seen to it that they got an old backslidden
preacher to come preach to them. That's right. His name was Bishop Balaam. Amen.
Oh, yes, he was there. You know what he done? He got them all mixed up in marriage
and divorce cases. That's what the devil done, the same thing. Amen. Hallelujah.
I seen a preacher the other day had four wives, living wives, said, "I don't know
what's the matter with my church." I said, "You oughtn't to have to look very far."
Amen. Oh, my. Yeah, he got them all mixed up out there, and begin to marry, intermarry.
That's the way they did today, when you got to wandering around. If you'd stayed
on the real firing line of God, you wouldn't have done these things. Marrying believers
with unbelievers, and in and out, and so forth, and marrying them that had been
married two or three times and had three or four wives, and so forth, and marry
them again. That's that old doctrine of Balaam. That's right. Oh, he was quite a
fellow now; he had a big name over in his land. So one day he jumped on his mule
and started down to put a curse on that little bunch of people that was wandering
around down there. God give them a little bit of what they needed, a little posterior
protoplasma stimulation, just exactly what every youngster needs. So God was a really
pouring it on them. And when He give them a real good spanking, here come this old
Balaam down. And you know what? He was so blind, and so sure he was going to win
that debate down there with Moses, till he couldn't see the Angel of the Lord standing
in the way.
Now, notice in the Bible, seers. We find out that Balaam fell because of money.
Now, the Moabites is not unbelievers. They were worshippers of Jehovah God. Certainly
they was. They even had a fine preacher over there by the name of Balaam, a prophet.
But like a whole lot of hireling prophets, was money crazy (Amen.), selling their
gifts. They're doing it today: fine gifted things out in the world to make money.
It's a disgrace. Compromising, borderline, one day in the world, the next day in
the church, you can't do that. You got to sell out, be borned again. Move plumb
inland as far as you can go; stay off the borderline.
Fundamentally, they were just as right, Moab was, as Israel was down here. But,
brethren, where — where Balaam failed to see, was the signs and wonders following
these believers down here. You see? God was in the camp. They had a smitten rock,
a brass serpent, a Pillar of Fire. The supernatural was with them, and so has it
been all along; and predicted as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so will this
in the last day. We got to have it.
One day there was somebody expecting to see something else happen, way back in the
east, in the land of India. I was there a couple of years ago, and it hasn't changed
a bit since that day: still just as primitive as it was. They had the wise men.
And they were watching the stars, for they know Balaam, the prophet, said that a
star shall rise out of Jacob. And they were watching for that star. And they knew
according to the Scriptures it was just about time for it to happen.
What was Balaam? He was a bishop. He was over all the church. He got up there just
as fundamental as he could be. He offered... Look there at him standing up there
in the celebrity, standing up there in their great celebrity. And they wasn't infidels;
they were believers. That — that tribe of Moab come out of Lot's daughter, Lot who
lived... Lot's daughter who lived with their father, and conceived and brought a
child, and that child was — sprang the tribe of Moab. And they were a great denomination,
great, flowery people; and they had princes and kings and celebrity. They had bishops
and cardinals and everything. And here come a bunch of holy-rollers up, the other
group, Israel, a little old bunch that was undenominations, interdenominationals.
And they done everything there was on the map to be done bad too. But what it was,
they had the spiritual revelation, and God was with them in a Pillar of Fire. Oh,
I — I know they had carnal things, and the people said, "Such a bunch of backwash
as that, nothing to do but kick them out." But they had the spiritual revelation,
and they had a smitten Rock; they had a brass serpent; they had a Pillar of Fire
going with them. Hallelujah. I know you — you think I'm excited, but I'm not. I just
feel good. Notice. When I think, "That same God, today, lives with us." It's still
the spiritual revelation of the Word. Certainly, it is. It's eternally right. Blessed
be the Name of the Lord. Yes, sir. There stood him up there with that fundamental,
them bunch of Baptists and Presbyterians stood up on the hill, and got their bishop
out there. And they were just as religious, in the same kind of religion; they worshipped
the same God. They said, "Look down there at that bunch of trash. Why, they don't
even have a denomination. They're nothing but a bunch of quacking, squealing, holy-rollers."
Is that right? Exactly, they was. If you don't believe they were holy-rollers, take
back in Genesis and find out when they crossed... When a miracle was performed,
and Miriam grabbed a tambourine and went down the bank, beating it, dancing in the
Spirit, and Moses sung in the Spirit. If that ain't a bunch of what we call free
holy-rollers, I don't know what is: singing and jumping and praising. And all the
time the nations hated them, but God was with them. They had the spiritual revelation,
was following that Pillar of Fire. And Moab said, "Now, looky here. We'll call all
the cardinals, and all the bishops, and all the presbyters, and get them out here.
We'll do something about it, 'cause we're a religious nation. We'll not let that
propaganda get mixed up in our fine denomination." And so they got them out there.
And they built twelve altars; that's just exactly what Israel had: twelve altars.
They put twelve sacrifices on it, bullocks; just exactly what Israel had, what God
required. They put twelve sheep on it, representing the coming of the Lord Jesus
Christ, twelve sheep in both places. All the celebrity, the bishops and all stood
around. They lit the sacrifice. They prayed; they raised their hands to Jehovah
and said, "Jehovah, hear us." What was they trying to do? And their old Balaam went
forth like that, and the Spirit come down upon him, sure, but he was a carnal. The
Spirit can fall upon a hypocrite; the Bible said. You've heard me teach that now.
"The rain falls on the just and unjust." But it has to compare with the Word; there's
where you get it.
And as we watch, we find, night after night, they watched It. They discussed It.
They looked at the Scriptures. And in searching I can see one coming, and say, "Here
is another Hebrew writing. It comes from one of their prophets, by the name of Balaam.
And he said, 'There shall rise a star to Jacob.'" And they seen the Scriptures being
fulfilled. Oh, how their hearts rejoiced. And how it should make our hearts rejoice
to know that in this evil day that we're now living, to see God's holy Writ being
fulfilled and revealed to us as a great searching Light over our being.
Fundamentally they were both right. But Israel had the revelation. For with Israel...
Moab just had stiff star — starchy church, very fundamental. But Moab had fundamentalism,
and a lot of nonsense too. But Balaam failed to see that supernatural sign among
them, the Pillar of Fire. He failed to see that atonement. He thought that a holy
God would curse such a people as that, just an outcast. But it isn't in your works;
it's your faith that does it. And they had the supernatural. The same thing in the
days of Jesus to the Pharisees, both of them, fundamentally right. But God was with
Christ. And great signs and wonders followed Him.
So fundamentally Moab was just as fundamental as Israel was. But the thing that
they failed to see is what the world's failing to see today. And their prophet up
there failed to see it. Balaam thought, surely, that a holy God would condemn a
people like that. But he failed to see that smitten Rock, that brass serpent, and
the Pillar of Fire, the signs and wonders. God has always dwelt with people. Where
God was, signs and wonders taken place. It's always been. That's the way they look
at the Pentecostal church today. Oh, they're all bunched up; they're this, that,
and the other. But who isn't? Tell me one church that isn't. Look at our Baptist
church; look at the denominations, and offsprings the Free Baptist, a hard shell
Baptist, Primitive Baptist, thirty some odd different sections of them, just as
bad as Pentecostal. And they fuss and fight with one another the same way. Look
at the Methodist church, even the Catholic church, any of them.
And when they were noticing that. And perhaps, one of them said, "Look. I wonder
if that doesn't compare with that Scroll that Daniel let us have, called the book
of Numbers, when the prophet Balaam said that there'd be a Star rise out of Jacob.
I wonder if that's the Star." Another one said, "We have never seen anything like
it." And they must've had a real jubilee then. They left the fire and went up on
the tower to watch that beautiful heavenly gift moving in the sky. You say, "A gift?"
Yes, it was a gift to them to guide them to the Saviour. They believed their gift
that was sent to them. But God has sent in this last days the Holy Spirit, the Gift
of God to guide us to Jesus, and still we don't believe It. I'm talking about the
world. And you out in radio-land tonight, I want you to think of that. How can you
stay home when there's a revival in the city where the Lord God is manifesting Himself.
A true hungry heart wants to get close to God, and they'll go to every move that
they know that comes from God. They'll search and seek, and hunger and thirst. They
long to see God. Come, take the Bible, and like the Magis did, and read it, and
see if the Scriptures compares with what's being done. Then if it is, you've got
a right to rejoice with exceeding great joy. And as they went up night after night,
watching this new visitor... They had never seen anything like it. They know the
Scriptures said it would be there, but they had never in all their life ever seen
such a gift in the heavens as what this one was. They studied it from every angle.
And the only thing that they could say was, "The Scripture declares it." So one
night, we'd say, while one was setting up watching, studying, it begin to move.
And it begin to go westward. And maybe while one was taking his rest, he raised
up and said, "Brethren, I just had a dream about that Star. And that is a sign that
the King, God has been born. And He's a King of the Jews, and He's a King of heaven.
He's a King of all peoples. And we must go worship Him." I'd imagine with such a
confirmation as that, they got the richest things they could get together. Someone
must go and take these gifts. Perhaps they cast lots, and it fell upon three of
those. And they loaded their camels with gold, myrrh, and frankincense. And they
waited until the Star come out again at night, and they noticed that it had moved
from its place, and was leading on westward. They got on their camels, and up over
Moab was good, a great nation, a brother to him. And Jacob had done everything;
he'd been a renegade; but yet he had one thing to achieve: that was to obtain that
promise, that birthright. Here come Israel, Jacob's children, with the same objective.
Now, who is going to be right? Balaam built seven altars; in Israel there was seven
altars. Balaam offered seven sacrifices of clean beasts; Israel offered seven sacrifices
of clean beasts. There as far if they take it ritually, Moab was just as religious
as Israel was, Esau just as religious as Jacob was, and Cain just as religious as
Abel was. But it's the election is what holds.
How about Moab? There was Israel; there was Moab, who worshipped the same God we
do. What was it? It was Lot's daughter's child. And there they was. They went out
and brought bishop Balaam in. And he made seven altars, just like they was down
in Israel. Now, Israel was a undenominational, had no nation to go to, but it was
going to one. Amen. Here we have no continuing city, but we're seeking one to come.
Watch. Balaamoffered seven clean sacrifices, bullocks, just like they had down in
Israel. And Balaam offered seven rams, speaking of the coming of Christ. So did
Israel. Then if fundamentalism is all that God requires, both places was justified.
But what was it? What was it that Balaam failed to see? He failed to see that Pillar
of Fire. He failed to see that smitten rock, that brass serpent going before Israel
for an atonement. He failed to hear the shout of the camp — of the King among them.
He judged them by their works. God don't judge no one by their works, judge you
by your faith. Notice. I want to clear that up about the little woman last night
too. It wasn't her works of washing her feet. He justified her then before Simon
by saying what she had done; He justified her by works, what she was doing. But
when He justified her in her own sight, He said, "Thy faith hath saved thee," 'cause
no man is justified by works. By her faith in Him being the Son of God, not what
she was doing, but her faith in Him... And your faith always tells your works. That's
And there come Moab out, which was a brother. Remember, he was part of Israel, too.
He was part, as from that Jewish descent, 'cause it was Lot's child by his daughter.
It brought out Moab. And look at Balaam, the priest, come out there and made an
altar, offered the same kind of sacrifices, just as fundamental as he could be.
See? And he had celebrity with him. He had the king. He had all the great men, the
princes and the eunuchs, standing with him.
And then we find out that Balaam, the prophet, back in Numbers 24:17, Balaam was
kind of a magi himself. He was a prophet, truly, and he prophesied here and said
a Star would rise out of Jacob.
Now, also, Balaam required a ram on each altar. That was speaking of his faith in
a coming Messiah. A ram, a he sheep, that's the same sacrifice they had down in
Israel; down in the camp of Israel, up here by — in Moab. The fundamentally, they
were both right, but, notice, fundamentally in doctrine. But one prophet down in
Israel's camp had the characteristics of God. And, the Word of God, he stayed with
the promise of God for that age, because he was in a line going to the promised
land. See? Now, as far as the fundamental part, Balaam, Balak could be just as identified
as Moses was.
And look at — look at up in Moab, the great organization. Same God! There come Balaam,
the bishop, out, built seven altars just like Israel had down there. Put seven clean
sacrifices, bullocks, and seven rams, speaking of the Coming of Christ. Fundamental,
they were both right. But look down here at this little renegade bunch floating
around, won't even pass through the ground. His pastor is afraid they'll have some
kind of a revival up there, so they wouldn't let them go through. On their road
to the promised land, too, and he wouldn't let his brother, Israel, pass through.
Right. He... What Balaam failed to see was that smitten Rock and that brass serpent,
the shout of the King in the camp. They fail to see that identification of God among
them. Both of them had prophets; Balaam up there, and Moses down here. But Moses
was identified with the Word. That's the difference. Both great preachers, but this
man was identified with the Word. He wasn't mighty, of a nation, as that was. But
he was identified with the Word, and had the evidence of It. Amen. That's the real
believing crew: Christ with us; Christ in us. "A little while and the world seeth
Me no more; yet ye shall see Me, for I'll be with you, even in you, to the end of
the world." Notice.
Now Balaam represented the denomination.
But now we find Balaam, a servant of God. And many of those men start out, and are
ordained of God, and does speak God's Word in many things; but when it comes to
the full Truth, they won't do it. Notice here, as a prophet of God, he should not
been caught in such a group as that, to begin with. He shouldn't have went with
Balaam had a gift of faith and could have used it to the perfect, original Word
of God. Many men on the field today, with gifts of healing, could do the same thing.
Many men out here, people speaking in tongues, people prophesying, a gift, could
use it for the Kingdom of God, but they don't do it.
We know that Balaam was a — a — a prophet. And Balak was the king of Moab, at the
time. And they were not infidels, up at Moab, they served the same God that Israel
served. Because, Moab, the nation was founded by Lot's son, by his daughter, and
so they served the same God. If you notice, their sacrifices and everything was
just exactly the same, bullocks, and also the rams, speaking of the second Coming.
And now if fundamentalism is all that God requires, then Moab was just as fundamental
in his offering as what Israel was. But we find them now, Israel is in the line
of following the Word of God, to a land that had been promised them. And they come...
And God told Balaam (and he was a prophet) first, He told him, "Don't go down."
But the influence of these other men caused him to do it contrary to what God said
do it, and it become a curse instead of revival.
65-0718M TRYING TO DO GOD A SERVICE WITHOUT BEING THE WILL OF GOD
Moses, a man sent from God, with the Word of God, and on his journey taking Israel
into the promised land, strictly with the commandment of God, he met another prophet,
another anointed one that had a genuine anointing of the same Holy Spirit that was
upon Moses. That's right. He was a prophet. The Holy Spirit was upon this man. His
name was Balaam. We're all acquainted with him. Well, the very things, the same,
the things — the things that the man said, is still taking place, about twenty-eight
hundred years ago. "Thou art like a unicorn, O Israel. Whoever blesses you will
be blessed. Whoever curses you will be cursed. Your strength, and mighty, how righteous
are thy tents, O Jacob!" See, he couldn't help himself. He come there purposing
in his heart to curse the people.
Brother, that's pretty fundamental, just about like Balaam was up here. Balaam was
just as fundamentally speaking as Moses was. Moses... The correct number of God
is seven. And Balaam said, "Build me seven altars; seven clean sacrifices, oxs,
and seven rams." That's speaking of the coming of the Son of God. Fundamentally,
he was just as right as any of them.
The Bible said, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses let every word be established."
I spoke of Balaam, I spoke of Balaam and of Moses.
Balaam taught the church the same thing. "Let us unite; we're all the same." It
was the last trick. God never forgave them for believing such a lie. Remember, it
was a unpardonable sin, three times in the Bible, for any persons to add one word
of their own interpretation to God's Word after It had been vindicated the Truth.
In the garden of Eden, right, in the garden of Eden, one word added caused death.
When Balaam added the word, that, "We're all the same," they, God never did forgive
Israel that. Every one of them perished in the wilderness, except the three that
God brought out. Jesus said, "They're, every one, dead," that's Eternally separated.
They're all gone; never was forgiven. It's a unpardonable sin; never forgiven them.
Oh, my! Flee it, children of the evening Lights!
And we give the illustrations of how that Balaam and Moses, both of them anointed
with the same Spirit, one of them said, "We're all one. Let's come join, put our
girls and all together. We got pretty girls over here, and you boys come over here
and take you a nice wife. That's all right, we're all one people, anyhow, the same
race." God never did forgive them for it.
Look at Balaam, he was a prophet, and he seen the Seed of God, vindicated. But under
his own great denomination that he lived in, Moab seen that bunch of wanderers coming
through the land, he sprayed it, and said, "Well, wait a minute. We're all Christians.
We're all believers. Why, our fathers and your fathers are the same. Aren't we Lot's
children? Wasn't Lot, Abraham's nephew? Aren't we all the same? Let's marry one
another." And Israel, as Eve in the garden of Eden, let Satan spray her, he also
sprayed Israel through a false prophet. When, the real prophet was with them, with
vindicated Word. But by an intellectual knowledge conception, he sprayed them. Think
of it. Now, it was never forgiven, the sin was never forgiven.
Do you believe Balaam was a prophet? The Bible said he was. Do you believe he was
a prophet? Now, remember, Balak come to him and said, "Go down and curse this people,
for they're all over the face of the earth. They're not even a denomination, not
a nation, they're just a scattered bunch; and we are the dignitaries of the land.
Now you go down there and curse them people, and I'll pay you for it." And Balaam
done exactly what a prophet should do, he said, "I'll not go. You just wait here,
overnight, let me see what God says do." So he went in, he said, "Lord, there's
some people out here with me that come, wanted me go down and curse some other people
down there." Said, "What do You want me to do about it?" God said, "Don't you go,
for them's My people!" Balaam went out, said, "Go on back to your house. I can't
go with you, God told me not to do it." Now, there's God's original Word: "Don't
go!" Well, then they went back, said, "You know, your bishop wouldn't listen." "Well,"
the king said, "tell you what we do. He needs a little money, I believe that could
persuade him. Or maybe I'll make him state presbyter, maybe I'll get him some great
something to do. I'll might make him the bishop, you can't tell what I might do.
Here, I'll tell you what I'll do. You fellows ain't got enough education to persuade
him anyhow; your his and hain'ts, and tote and fetch and carry, ain't right. He
wouldn't listen to you, we'll send a real educated bunch down, more dignitary."
They went down there, said, "Doctor Balaam, Doctor Balaam, greetings to you. I bring
you salutations from the king." "Morning, brethren." See? "Now, Doctor Balaam..."
And, oh, the vocabulary, how it was really poured on. And said, "Now, the king has
said that he will exalt you, and he will also give you great honor. And, you know,
they only offered you so much money to take this charge, but the king says he'll
triple it, quad-triple it, if you'll just come to take it." Then, Balaam, got itching
hands. He got foolish ideas and he stirred his mind. Now, remember, he called God
by it, anointed, but he stirred God right away from the original plan. And that's
exactly what Pentecost has done! To be popular, you Oneness, you Trinity, for popularity
you denominated to be different, you organized and you're dead! You'll never rise
again. But, you see, you ought to have stayed with God's orig-... He pulled you
out of that Assembly to make you a people, but you organized and went right back
into the same puke you come (excuse me) out of, the same stuff you come out of,
"As a dog goes to its vomit and a hog to its wallow." I'm sorry I said that, forgive
me, that's not right for the platform here. See? I just said that in the flesh.
Notice now that that's what I mean, to vomit. I should have said it like that. The
word was all right, but just misused. See? It was used all right, but just a missound,
uh-huh...?... Vomit, "As a dog returns to its vomit." If the Assemblies of God,
the General Council, organized Pentecost at the first place and got them into that
so they could not accept the revelation, don't you know, Oneness, you done the same
thing. How could you receive a Message of "serpent's seed, Eternal security," and
these other things that's come forth? You're so tightly organized till you won't
even let It in your door, uh-huh, uh-huh, same thing Balaam did. But God didn't
change His mind. So Balaam went over and said, "Lord, now look, I really got an
opportunity now to be somebody. You know I been a nobody, but I got a opportunity
to be somebody. What do You say about it now, Lord?" Now, he should never have said
that! He knowed exactly what God said do! So do every one of you that's baptized
in the name of the "Father, Son, Holy Ghost," on these other issues of the Bible
that's supposed to be in this day, you know what to do about It, is accept It! When
you see God plainly vindicate "It's the Truth," that's God interpreting His Own
Word. But will you do it? No, your organization won't let you do it! Many of the
ministers there in Tucson that's listening in this morning. Brother Gilmore, I have
nothing against you; Brother Brock, First Assembly, and Friendly church. You men,
I was there all that time, you wouldn't even let me come in. I... Sure, you couldn't,
you can't and remain what you are. You can't accept revelation, 'cause you're denominated.
And listen, just as Uzziah was killed because he was under that false inspiration,
so is many true Christians losing their experience back in those old dead denominations,
because they're putting their hand on the Ark when they're not ordained to do so.
Now you can believe It, or not believe It, that's up to you. God's your Judge. God
never did take back His Word. What He said the first time, He says for every time.
He told Balaam, "Don't you go!" And then Balaam come back, said, "But Lord, could
I go?" Now look! God said, "Go on!" Now, He give him permission to go. There is
a permissive will of God, and not the original will of God. You see what a trouble
he got into? And any man that builds anything, any organization, or anything outside
of upon the Word of God, it's shaking sands and will fall! It'll die as sure as
anything, because the Word of God is a growing Body of the Bride. You can't have
it all foot, all arm, all thigh. These things come in their season. And Pentecost,
you made it all one thing, therefore you can't accept new revelation. That's the
reason you stay right where you're at and die; moves on. (So much, don't want to
wear you out.) But God doesn't change His mind, His first decision is exactly right.
So God doesn't change His mind, He just let you go on in your permissive will. "God's
a good God," as Oral Roberts says. He's also a fearful God!
65-1127B TRYING TO DO GOD A SERVICE WITHOUT IT BEING GOD'S WILL
Look at the prophet Balaam and the prophet Moses. Both of them with seven altars,
Jehovah's altars, blood on each one; and not only that, but rams on each one. In
numerology, exactly the right number, seven, "perfect," seven rams. Just exactly
alike, both altars. As fundamental as one was, the other one was also. But who did
God vindicate? See? See? The one that was in His Word. Fundamental doesn't mean
too much; it's the revelation of God.
