Dig A Little Deeper: Oppression of Women

As with many "Message" cult doctrines we have examined, William Branham's doctrine on gender roles strayed far from the Christian religion. Former cult victims often compare the cult leader's statements to that of radical Islam during the deprogramming phase. After realizing that the cult is largely misogynistic in teaching and extra-biblical rules, former female cult victims experience freedom much more than male escapees.

In contrast, evangelists of the Chrisitan faith have a high level of success in gaining new converts simply based on gender equality. Historically speaking, the ancient Jewish faith appears to have given women more rights than the other ancient religions, and Chrisitan apologists often compare the Mosaic Law to Ancient Near East (ANE) law in their defense of the Christian faith. This equality is even more amplified in the New Testament. Women were not only given a status of equality (Galatians 3:28-29), they were often given direct focus in key passages of text. One could even argue that the status of women was strongly elevated when Jesus was born of a virgin.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus spoke to women with clear respect. Though the word "woman" in today's English can be used in a disrespectful way, Jesus used the proper form of the word when addressing women in the Bible. When Jesus called Mary "woman" (John 19:26), the word translates to a higher form of respect. In today's English, Jesus would have been saying, "Madame, behold thy son."

This continued throughout his life, but not simply in speech. Key events gave respect to women. His first miracle (water to wine) was performed in response to a plea from His mother (John 2:1-11), and the ressurrection of Lazarus came at the request of two women (John 11:1-44). He revealed himself as Messiah first to a woman, not a man. (John 4:25- 26), and he was annointed with oil by a woman (John 12:1-8).

Ancient prophecy was fulfilled when the Spirit of God was given equally to men and women at Pentecost, signifying the spiritual equality of men and women (Acts 2:17). As a result, women were among the very first "believers" who made up the early church (Acts 5:14; Acts 8:12; 17:4, 12). In fact, the first church in Europe started with a group of women and actually met in the home of a woman (Acts 16:13-15).

Though many fundamental churches today do not practice equality in spreading the Gospel, Jesus did. Women were included with men in His expanded group of disciples (Mark 15:41). He commissioned women as the very first evangelists (Matthew 28:1- 10; John 20:17). Women were included in the group of disciples who for prayer after the Jesus ascended (Acts 1:14). At least one early church was led (or co-led) by a woman (1 Corinthians 16:19). And the early church was staffed by many women (Romans 16:12, Philippians 4:3).

Even after His death, the focus on women continued. Women stayed with Him throughout His crucifixion, even after the men had left (Matthew 27:55-56). The Gospels specifically describes women observing His burial (Matthew 27:61). After His resurrection, He appeared first to a woman, not a man (John 20:1- 16).

The cult following of William Branham is by no means similar to the Bible's example. William Branham often degraded or even ridiculed women from behind the pulpit, and cult leaders often follow suit. While William Branham expresses very alarming inner thoughts about women, men in the cult often laugh as though they agree. New female converts find themselves horrified to sit and listen to a congregation full of men laughing uproariously as William Branham describes women as "not worth a good clean bullet to shoot her." (51-0419A, My Life Story).

Branham's views on women do not appear to be limited to his stage persona. When describing his personal life, Branham often describes one where his wife is inferior or neglected. He often bragged that he had went twenty years without having spent a wedding anniversary with his wife. Instead, he often spent it hunting with Gene Goad and Leo Mercier who were later found to be homosexual.

Then the Lord Jesus spoke to me a little later on, about my wife down there, as you know, about where I went up there. I've never been home on a anniversary yet, and we've been married twenty-two years. The first anniversary, the first, our wedding, why, I took her on a hunting trip. Cause, I couldn't afford to take the hunting trip, and—and—and go on a honeymoon, too, so I—I kind of put it together. And so, then, and I've been hunting ever since. I felt the way I'd treat her.

From a doctrinal standpoint, Branham changed many scenes of the Bible from gender equality to inequality. While the Bible describes a Genesis story where God created both male and female as a unified human form, (Gen 5:2), Branham claimed that Satan was the designer of the female. In fact, Branham claimed that women were not even in the original creation, and that because of this, they were lessor creatures than animals (which he also qualified with male and female stature). While the Bible claims that sin came through Adam (Romans 5:12), Branham claimed that sin came through Eve.

She is not in God's original creation. She is a by-product

Now, there is nothing designed that can deceive, and be deceived, as easy as a woman. There is nothing designed or can stoop as low as a woman can. Think now. There is nothing designed, in all creation, that can stoop as low as a woman can.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

There is no hog, no dog, or no other animal, designed like her or can stoop as low as she can stoop. Now, that is true.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

Just think of this now. There is nothing in the world, made in God's creation, that can be immoral, stoop that low. You say, "Wait a minute, 'man'!" We're going to get to that. The woman has to say "yes." Notice, there is nothing designed to stoop so low, or be filthy, but a woman. A dog can't do it, a hog can't do it, a bird can't do it. No animal is immoral, nor it can be, for it is not designed so it can be. A female hog can't be immoral, a female dog can't be immoral, a female bird can't be immoral. A woman is the only thing can do it. Now you see where Satan went?
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

She is designed, alone, for filth and unclean living. A dog can't, and no other female can. It's just the woman that can.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

You may question me about Satan being her designer, but that's the Truth. Satan designed her. He still does it.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

Why didn't He make her like that in the beginning, like the rest of His females? Because it would be unbecoming to Him. He is the Fountain of all purity. That's the reason He had to let Satan get a hold of her, what he done in the perversion. Such a creature would be, would not be becoming to Him, originally designed for.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

Excuse this, young ladies. She is nothing but a human garbage can, a sex exposal. That's all she is, an immoral woman, is a human sexual garbage can, a pollution, where filthy, dirty, ornery, low-down filth is disposed by her. What is she made this way for? For deception. Every sin that ever was on the earth was caused by a woman. And an analyst just from Chicago, a—a woman wrote this article, the police force; that they chased down, in United States, metropolitan United States, that "Ninety-eight percent of every crime that was ever did in any form, in the United States, there was either a woman in it or behind it.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

When, in God's sight, the Word, she is the lowest of all animals that God put on the earth.
- Branham, 65-0221M (listen to audio)

You remember what was the first perversion? Was a woman.
- Branham, 62-0706 (listen to audio)

This was my remark then, "They're not worth a good clean bullet to kill them with it." That's right. And I hated women. That's right. And I just have to watch every move now, to keep from still thinking the same thing.
- Branham, 59-0419 (listen to audio)

As his cult progressed over time, oppression of women became even more severe -- especially with regards to dress code. Early photos of the Branham family show females wearing skirts above the knees, sometimes with sleeveless tops. The cult following today condemns this type of female clothing as "scandalous," and cult leaders often refer to women showing the flesh of knees or shoulders as "harlots." Few are aware that their insults are also against Branham's family and/or William Branham himself.

Along with the verbal abuse, some become physically violent as Branham instructed. Branham often repremanded the male parts of his congregation for not being more physically aggressive towards women that violated cult rules of dress code and more. In Branham's sermons, men were instructed to physically assault women with boards. Those caught wearing makeup were to suffer a worse fate; Branham claimed that Jezebel of the Old Testament was fed to the dogs for "wearing makeup", and because of this, any woman seen wearing cosmetics were to be referred to as "dog meat" (to be killed).

Now, you can take some of these little two-by-fours if you want to, but that's what God said. That's what Christ said. Now, that's the truth. Oh, God be merciful. What must the great Holy Spirit think when He comes before the Father? You say, "Why you picking on us women?" All right, men, here you are. Any man that'll let his wife smoke cigarettes and wear them kind of clothes, shows what he's made out of. He's not very much of a man. That's exactly right. True. He don't love her or he'd take a board and blister her with it. You know that's the truth. Now, I don't say that to be smart. I'm telling you the truth. That's right.
- Branahm, 58-0324 (listen to audio)

But there was only one woman in the Bible that ever painted her face, and that was Jezebel. That's right. The Bible said she painted her face. And do you know what God did to her? He fed her to the dogs. That's exactly right. So when you see a woman with painted face, you can say, "It's God's dog meat." That's exactly what God said it was. Now, you know that's true.
