Merry Christmas:

One of my favorite things in life is watching how people change during Christmas. Though I avoid the crowds at all cost, I can't help but enjoy noticing people and their expressions in stores during the holidays. Whether it's the time-is-money businessman in his expensive suit pausing to smile as he holds the perfect toy for his child, or the poor father who can barely afford to buy a gift, Christmas has a way of opening windows to the soul. Deep inside all of us, we love to see the faces of children light up with excitement.

Growing up in the "Message", I was one of the fortunate ones allowed to celebrate Christmas. It's difficult for me, as a father, to imagine doing anything that could ever make my children sad. I'm really not sure how things progressed that far. I want to think that deep inside, each of those fathers wanted to bring excitement to their children during the holidays. Even still, I get emotional when I think of how sad their faces must have been when they were neglected each Christmas. Like the poor father who could barely afford a gift, these fathers were also struggling. While it may not have been a financial struggle, they were suffering just the same.

Though my family has always celebrated Christmas, there is a change in my views after leaving the "Message". Yes, it is an over-commercialized holiday, and many seem to have forgotten the reason for the season. Still, I can't help but notice the increased love and compassion during this time of year. I've learned to focus on the good things, and Christmas brings out the good in very many people. As a child, I wished Christmas could come every day. As an adult, however, I've learned special moments are far more cherished.

I enjoy a time of year when all people come together in love! I enjoy watching faces light up with excitement! Most of all, I love the freedom to celebrate. Not everyone has that freedom.

From our house to yours, Merry Christmas!
