The entire sermon is taken from Proverbs 3:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
When taken out of context, this sounds like Solomon is telling us not to become educated. WMB said as much:
Today we send our children to the school, to have understanding. Then after they are through the grammar schools, we send them to high school for a better understanding of knowledge. Then after they are through there, some children are even fortunate enough to go to college, and go through college to complete their education and their understanding of knowledge. What they are acquired of by... Many times, to get a job, you have to have at least a high school understanding, or a college education, or so forth. Yet, the wise Solomon told us that, "not to lean to it, not to our own understanding; learn not of these things."
Solomon never said "learn not of these things [education, wisdom]. In fact, further down in the same chapter, Solomon spoke of getting God's wisdom:
Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding,
Science and education has proven and will continue to prove God. The Christian can see it because God opens their own eyes. Not because they decided to lean on the wisdom of a prophet that placed his wisdom on Gnostic texts.
Now may that Eagle, God! You know, God likens His prophets to eagles. And He calls Himself an eagle; He is Jehovah Eagle, Papa Eagle.
This is a common theme throughout WMB's ministry, and yet is not Biblical. It can only be used for a prophet who is attempting to make himself very close to the level of God.
The eagle is used for a little over 30 references in the Bible:
- God: Exodus 19:4, Deuteronomy 28:49, Proverbs 23:5, Jeremiah 49:16, Deuteronomy 32:11, Ezekiel 17:7
- The actual bird: Leviticus 11:13, Deuteronomy 14:12, ob 39:27, Proverbs 30:19, Ezekiel 1:10, Ezekiel 10:14
- Speed of Warriors: 2 Samuel 1:23, Jeremiah 4:13, Jeremiah 48:40, Jeremiah 49:22, Lamentations 4:19, Habakkuk 1:8
- Passing of Time: Job 9:26
- King of Babylon: Ezekiel 17:3,
- Nebuchadnezzar's hair: Daniel 4:33
- One of the Four Kings: Daniel 7:4
- One of the Four Creatures: Revelation 4:7
- The Woman: Revelation 12:14
- Eagle announcing the three angels: Revelation 8:13
- Edom: Obadiah 1:4
- Baldness: Micah 1:16
- YOU AND ME: Psalm 103:5, Isaiah 40:31
The Truth of the matter is that God likens HIMSELF to an eagle. According to the Bible, YOU AND I have just as much 'likening' to an eagle as WMB does.
For some unknown reason, WMB pulls out a Pagan idea from his mind and throws it into the sermon. From the sound of it, he caught himself, and back-tracked in front of the audience of men from other churches who actually knew their Bible:
Now, you know, many times, they take one another's spirits; and so that might point, in like a group of man, to a certain thing, but it won't--it won't point to Christ. But the Holy Spirit always points to Christ, and Christ is the Word. We see this so plainly in the Bible. Or, I do. Maybe I might be wrong, but, in my thinking, but I don't think so.
Taking one another's spirits is a Pagan idea, and is definitely NOT in the Bible. Men can only take the Holy Spirit or the evil spirit. That being said, he did say that he might be wrong about this, so we can skip it.
He then started to pull one of his "women are the cause of the fall" quotes out of his hat, but stopped himself in mid-sentence in front of the crowd that studied their bibles:
Now, but we find that Eve was easily persuaded by Satan, from the Word of God, and she leaned on her own understanding, because Satan had projected something to her which wasn't to her real understanding of God. But she had something else told to her by the enemy, Satan, and she believed it.
Now we find the results of this. It plunged the whole human race to death, because the first mother on the earth, leaned to her own understanding, contrary to the Word of God, and plunged the whole human race to death. Now do you believe that? [Congregation says, "Amen."--Ed.] That's the Word. Well, a woman is always...
The description of The Fall WMB gives here is not Biblical, however. Sin entered into the world by one man (Adam), not by one woman. (Rom 5:12) Eve did not lean to her own understanding; she was DECEIVED by Satan! She leaned on Satan's understanding, not her own. (1 Timothy 2:14)
I find it odd that he also uses the 'organization' as an example, a member of a great body of people.
And when the Word is made manifest, the Word is revealed, they won't accept It, because they won't do it, because they lean to their own understanding. "This church was built here. It's a beautiful place. It's a great organization. It's a member of a great body of people. Why shouldn't we belong to that? I'll trust in it." Trust not in your own understanding, but trust in the Word of the Lord!
When you consider that the followers are now either a "Message Believer" or "one who ain't", and they have created their own denomination, this quote is striking.
He then speaks out against those who study the Bible together:
And some of these so-called, perverted, Bible schools teaching man's knowledge 65-0120 LEAN.NOT.UNTO.THY.OWN.UNDERSTANDING
John 5:39-40 INSTRUCTS us to study the scriptures.
Afterwards he speaks out against the IRS:
Sometime ago, someone... I was in a dispute on the income tax. And they said to me, said, "Why, your trustees are nothing but puppets, I suppose."
The Bible, of course, instructs us to "render unto Caeser that which is Caeser's (speaking of taxes). When you consider the AMOUNTS that the IRS were coming after, for this man who claimed to be poor, you find that the IRS did NOT lean unto their own understanding -- they had accurate records that WMB did not render unto Caeser.
In 1955 WMB ran into in difficulties with the IRS. He owed $390K in back taxes, which WMB never repaid. At death, $3M+ plus stocks & bonds was found in his vault. A recalculation makes $3M (1965 USD) equivalent to 21 Million (2010 USD).
WMB then gets to the heart of the matter (in his eyes):
I'm just getting to this. That thing is occuring again, till, men and women and people will lean to a certain church that they have joined and belonged to, no matter what the Word of God says about it. They go right on with that, leaning to their own understanding, and ignoring the Word of God, as if It hadn't (never) even been written. It's un-germitized seed of human life. It's got the physical life, but no spiritual life in it to be quickened. The veil was over their face.
Joining a church that believes in Jesus Christ as their savior, and that faith in Jesus Christ will give them eternal life is NOT condemned in the Bible. It was not condemned by any of the 'church age messengers' that WMB 'chose', and they themselves fought against those who did not confirm to orthodox beliefs.
WMB then condemns the rich:
The Bible promised in the last days, that, "The Laodicea Church Age would get so rich, and get so in suffic--... or in a sufficiency of their own, 'I am rich. I have need of nothing. I set as a queen.'" And she is rich. And He said, "Thou knowest it not that you are miserable." Now that's the entire church age, the church! "To the church of Laodicea, you are naked, blind, poor, miserable, and don't know it." Sitting in her riches, ten thousands times ten thousands, and thousands of members, wealth of the world in her hand, almost.
It is VERY interesting when you think about the amount of money WMB had in bank accounts at this time according to those close to him. While he condemns ten thousands, he sat on millions...
He goes on to accuse the rich organizations:
But the churches, themself, has become rich. "Pretty near the wealth of the world," says the Bible, "lays in the Catholic church." That's why Russia run her out, why Russia excommunicate... That's, was the very grass roots of communism, because the church taught to be something, there wasn't no more from the rest of the world.
Little did he know that the world would one day find out that his own organization is sitting on over A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS!!!
He gives an example of the boy in Finland that was raised from the dead:
When we was up there in Finland, that little boy was raised from the dead. There stood them Russian soldiers at attention, and they said, "We will receive a God that can raise up the dead."
Interesting fact here: according to those around him, WMB was the ONLY one who pronounced the child 'dead.' He claimed it was 'packed in the newspapers', but that claim was evidently fabricated since not a single newspaper can be found of this 'miracle.'
Oh, people, don't think I... You may think I'm crazy. But when my voice is silenced in death, these tapes will still be playing, and you'll recognize that what I've said has come to pass
Was this supposed to happen BEFORE or AFTER 1977, which is the date he predicted the world to end?
Though it's of little importance, it should be noted that the height and size of Samson came only from WMB's opinion:
What of Samson, out in the field, when the Philistines, a thousand men run up on him? And there he was standing there, a little bitty, curly-headed shrimp, about that high. He didn't; well, he wasn't a swordsman, 'cause he didn't know; he had no training, military training. He was just a little old curly-headed sissy, like, with seven locks hanging down, mama's boy, standing out there, and here come a thousand Philistines. Well, he didn't have nothing in his hand. He looked down, and he found an old, bleached-out, white jawbone of a mule, and he picked it up.
There is nothing in the Bible that suggests that Samson was a little 'sissy,' and it is even believed that he may have been related to the Philistines. Similar stories are found in other legends and religious 'gods' that suggest their 'gods' were actually a descended legend of Samson. Greek Herakles (Hercules) has many similarities. Either way, Samson was a man of God, and the point is not his size -- the point is his God!
WMB then throws in a little marriage and divorce (not debating that in this thread):
What if John would have tried to lean to his own understanding? But he walked right up. They said, "Now, wait a minute, John, don't you preach on Marriage And Divorce." He walked right up to Herod's place, and he said, "It's not lawful for you to have her."
The point John was making here was not only Herodius leaving Herod's brother, but the fact that their own bloodlines were too close. (Herodias being the daughter of Aristobulus, the brother of both Herod and Philip [Josephus, Antiquities, 18.5,4].)
Then ... the WORST statement in the entire sermon. WMB actually compares Eve to Judas Iscariot!
There was one man who did lean to his own understanding, and his name was Judas Iscariot. Oh, he... I--I don't see how he could have done it. He had walked face to face with Christ, just like Eve did in the beginning. He had seen the vindication, he had looked at God in the face, like Eve did in the cool of the evening. Eve looked at Christ, in the cool of the evening, in the garden. And Judas had sat in the cool of the evening, in the garden of Gethsemane and many places, and had looked at the same Christ; had heard Him teach, prove Himself by the Word, vindicated to be the Prophet that Moses had spoke of would be raised up. And told them in the Scripture Who He was, and all about it. They had seen it proved by God, that He was, and then he leaned to his own understanding.
As we proved before, Eve was deceived, and Adam was the cause of the fall. This is purely showing WMB's hatred for women.
WMB then speaks about his 'commission':
Now the Bible said, "That He is the High Priest, today, that can be touched by the feeling of our infirmities." That right? [Congregation says, "Amen."--Ed.]
Don't go to reason, say, "Oh, that's..."
He said, "Today He is that. He is right now a High Priest that can be touched by the feeling of our infirmities. The same yesterday, today, and forever!"
What do you think when I was out there as a Baptist preacher, and that Angel of the Lord met me out there and commissioned me to go do this that I'm doing? Why, my pastor said, "You've gone crazy. Why, you had a nightmare, you."
It should be noted this is another story that changed and grew over time.
His angelic visitations or commissions happened prior to birth,10 at birth,11 in 1915, at seven years of age,12 in 1920 at twelve years of age,13 in 1923 at 14 or 15 years of age,14 in 1930 in 1931 in 1932 in 1933 1936 in 1944 on May 6, 1946 on May 7, 1946 or on May 6, 1947 in 1950 in Houston, TX, and finally in 1963 in Arizona. Seemingly coincidental with his many commissions, there appears to exist a disturbing parallel phenomenon of mental depression in the life of WMB. This mental illness also recurred about every seven years, of which WMB spoke just before his death.
